Arete, derived from Ancient Greek mythology describes the aggregate of all qualities, valour, virtue, excellence, making up good character.
My goal is to produce small parcels of distinctive and distinguished wine that is true to its region and variety.
Wherever possible these wines will be sourced from a single vineyard.
Arete expresses my energy, enthusiasm and passion for wine.
Produced in tiny quantities, they are truly handmade throughout the entire production process, from the vineyard to the bottle.
The Winemaker – Richard Bate
Like many of my peers, I trod a well worn path into the wine industry via hospitality.
As a graduate of Charles Sturt Uni with a Bachelor of Science (Wine Science Major) sparked the winemaking fire. Vintages with Barossa Valley Estate, and most particularly within the Fosters Group at Saltram, Wolf Blass and Penfolds, has led me to the establishment of Arete.
Following my departure from Fosters, I took a position within the Francois Freres Group distributing barrels within Australia.
The Francois Group is one of the largest global cooperage groups, and is still predominantly family owned with its roots still firmly planted within the village of St Romain in Burgundy.
Needless to say, the encouragement of the Francois family has played a significant part in the establishment of Arete.
The wines that I admire have their own personality and real depth to their character.
They can push the envelope in terms of style, make a statement and unapologetically take a position and stand for their style.
To that end I am particularly influenced by the great wines of Burgundy together with the amazing dry reds produced by Saltram in the Barossa during the 50s and 60s.
